A base layer, something warm over it, and a waterproof shell on top — then you subtract indoors and add on deck. I have worn the shell in June and been glad of it; I have also peeled down to a T-shirt in September. The rainiest stretch is September–October, but pack for rain whatever the month, and remember the local consolation: rain means bigger waterfalls, as I explain on the best-time page.
On the RIB
The fjordsafari operator hands you a life jacket and goggles — the goggles are provided for a reason, so dress in things that can take spray and wind. Closed shoes over sandals. The ride is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems, whatever they are wearing; the rest is in the RIB review.
On the open decks
The sightseeing cruise has outdoor decks and an indoor cabin, so you can retreat when the shell loses the argument. The waterfall-tasting catamaran has limited unshaded outdoor seating — on a clear July day that means sun cream and sunglasses, not just a jumper. A hood beats an umbrella on any boat; fjord wind treats umbrellas as sport.
On foot

Do I need waterproofs for a summer fjord cruise?
Bring the shell. Western Norway can rain in any month, the deck of a moving boat runs cooler than shore, and the boats sail in rain — which, as the best-time page notes, only makes the waterfalls better.
Does the RIB safari provide gear?
A life jacket and goggles, yes — the rest is your own layers. Wear wind-proof, spray-tolerant clothing and closed shoes. Note the ride is not for pregnant women or people with back problems.
